The characters evoke about every possible emotion; we all know people like these characters. Was in awe over how much true history (on so many levels - both local and national) was included. This sums up exactly what a young girl- Addie, learned back in the early 1900's as she was left an orphan and was graciously offered a job away from "home" and her friends,to be a "nurse-maid" to an elderly kind woman.
She did what she did best. Learned to trust, love and move forward with a reward of a goal to be a nurse in view.
There were many oppositions to overcome for Addie, including a horrid man who would really have liked her dead and tried.
This is an interesting book, taking place in a time with segregation, corruption and yet many open hearts.
I enjoyed this novel and I think that you will too..
Historical novels are not my most loved genre, but this one was great. The characters seemed so real and 3 dimensional. I am lucky to have had a chance to read this novel. I definitely recommend this book!

Great read. Strong characters and plot showing the plight of women in the 1900's. I really didn't want the story to end...looking forward to a sequel!

I'm a columnist and published author for 25 years and the author of the Sacred Heart series (historical fiction) based in 1900s Atlanta - Aspirations of the Heart and Hope Never Rests. The 3rd and final book will be released next year - TBD, 2019.
Social and political issues are the driving forces behind my work. I choose to weave in topics into the storyline that society was dealing with 100 years ago that we are still trying to address today. Aspirations of the Heart discusses quality healthcare, scandal, greed, a toxic tonic scandal, quick medicinal fixes, and the federal laws that were shaping and reforming the health and welfare of the country. In Hope Never Rests, the illicit sex trade of children is the epicenter of the storyline. Unfortunately, Atlanta remains one of the largest hubs for such acts today.
The Sacred Heart series was inspired by my maternal grandma, "Gigi," who was born in Daviess County, IN, and disowned for wanting to pursue an education and become a registered nurse. She enrolled into Methodist Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1924, graduating in 1927. She knew that an education was the key to breaking the chains of poverty and her sacrifice forever changed our family's trajectory. Ninety years later, in November, 2017, our family donated her cape, cap, and nursing memorabilia to Georgia Gwinnett College - School of Nursing's History of Nursing display where her portrait and Indiana-based story serves to inspire future generations of nurses.”

Aspirations of the Heart Book 1 introduces us to Addie Engel, the character inspired by Katie’s grandmother, who desperately wants to become a nurse and leave the family farm for a larger life in Georgia in 1913. A tragedy opens the door for Addie, who finds herself in rapidly-growing Atlanta and a cesspool of power that includes a conniving man who will do anything to make his cure-all tonic a success.
Aspirations of the Heart stole my heart, earning 5-Stars for poetic language, characters we learn to love and a richly detailed Southern setting that brings history to life. Highly recommended!
